Difference between RIP Version 1 And RIP Version 2

Difference between RIP Version 1 And RIP Version 2

RIP :
RIP is an IGP type dynamic ip routing protocol which is use for identity the best path from source to destination in the internetwork using the metric hop count .

Note-
a)Rip is a an IGP type dynamic ip routing protocol so it can communicate only within the AS.
b)RIP uses the metric hop count. so it counts the less no. of hop in the way from source to destination c)RIP can count maximum 15 hop.
d)If the destination is on the 16th hop then it will be a host unreachable for rip.
e) RIP uses the concept of split horizon and root poisoning method.
f)The ad value of rip is 120. so it is less reliable then OSPF, IGRP, EIGRP.

There are two version of RIP-

1.RIP ver.1:
a) can support class full addresses only.
b) can support SLSM (FLSM).
c) broadcast the routing table.
d) broadcast address is 255.255.255.255.

2.Rip ver.2:
a) can support class full as well as class less addresses.
b) can support SLSM (FLSM)+VLSM.
c) multicast the routing table.
d) broadcast address is 224.0.0.9 .

RIP timers:
1) Route update timer-30 secs.
2) Route invalid timer-180 secs.
3) Route hold down timer-180 secs.
4) Flush timer-240 secs.
